Višnjan is a picturesque Istrian town located on a hill with a view of a large part of the western Istrian coast. In clear weather, alpine peaks can be seen in the distance in Slovenia and Italy, and during clear nights the lights of the distant Italian Adriatic coast.
It is only 12 km away from Porec and the sea.
The old town delights everyone who steps into it. It was once surrounded by walls from which today you can see the former city gates on which stands out the Venetian lion of St. Marc with an open book.
Višnjan is world famous for its observatory located a few km outside the city. In their work so far, its members – volunteers have discovered over 1,400 asteroids and 2 comets. Visits are possible throughout the year, and during the summer months, they have an open door program where you can see the observatory, listen to interesting lectures and watch the beautiful starry sky over Višnjan through a telescope.
The autochthonous gastronomic offer of wine cellars and colorful taverns in the town and surrounding villages is imbued with specialties of traditional Istrian cuisine where truffles, prosciutto, boškarin, wild asparagus, fish and seafood, but also other ingredients give a specific note of taste.
The surroundings of Višnjan are rich in vineyards and olive groves, through which numerous wine roads and olive oil roads lead. It is a wonderful opportunity for recreation and getting to know the area where you are and the people who live in it.
