Quality of olive oil

Just one more detail, I want to explain what it is – extra virgin olive oil.

According to the regulations we use, olive oils are divided into several groups. Ten parameters are used to determine which group an oil belongs to, and the most famous parameter is acidity, i.e. the content of free fatty acids.

The highest quality group is extra virgin olive oil, which is obtained directly from the olive fruit exclusively by mechanical methods and which contains less than 0.8 g of free fatty acids per 100 g of oil.

It should be noted that in order for an olive oil to be declared extra virgin, it is not enough that the content of free fatty acids is below the prescribed limit, but it must meet all the parameters prescribed in the Ordinance on oils from the fruit and pomace of olives..

A slightly lower group in terms of quality is called virgin olive oil, and it is obtained directly from the olive fruit exclusively by mechanical procedures, and it may contain up to 2.0 g of free fatty acids per 100 g of oil.

We also have several groups of olive oils obtained by refining olive oil and mixing different types of olive oil, as well as oil obtained from the pomace of the olive fruit.

For the lowest group in terms of quality, we use the Italian term – lampante oil or oil for oil lamps, this implies that it is not an oil that can be used in human nutrition.

We regularly send our olive oil to an authorized institution for analysis. In our case, it is Food – the biotechnology laboratory of the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism in Poreč. We have always met all the parameters so that our oil belongs to the group of extra virgin olive oils.

Every year, we present our olive oil for evaluation organized by the Association of Olive Growers of the Istrian County Olea Tar, as well as at the Oleum Olivarum Meetings in Krasica near Buje.

According to the evaluation results, we have always been in the top 10% in terms of the quality of our olive oil. I believe that we will continue to do so.
